Your Spring Bouquet Starts Right Here
Autumn is here, and that makes it the perfect time to plant tulip bulbs. With tulip bulbs from Ivy’s Bloemenkiosk at Amsterdam Centraal Station, your garden will burst with colour next spring. With a little care, your tulips will come back year after year, so you’ll be picking your very own bouquet every spring. That is an extra gift, on the house.
Step 1: Plant your tulip bulbs
Tulip bulbs love to be planted between October and December, when the soil is cool so now is the perfect time to get started. They rest in the ground over winter and wake up in spring, ready to bloom. Just follow these simple steps to grow your own tulips:
1. Choose a sunny spot with soil that drains well
2. Dig a hole about 10 to 15 centimetres deep.
3. Place the tulip bulbs pointy end up, around eight to ten centimetres apart.
4. Cover the bulbs with soil and press it down lightly.
5. Water them well once. The winter cold will do the rest.
Step 2: Pick your own bouquet of tulips
In April and May, your tulips will be ready to shine. Picking them is easy, but a few simple things make all the difference for a bouquet that lasts.
- Pick the tulips when the buds show colour but haven’t opened yet (as shown in the figure).
- Keep the leaves on the plant, so the bulb can store energy and bloom again next spring.
- Put the tulips straight into a clean vase with a little cold water.
!Some tips!
-Pick your tulips in the morning or evening, when the flowers are firmest and full of moisture, so they stay fresh for longer.
-Use a sharp knife or clean scissors to cut the stem at an angle, as low to the ground as possible.
